The European is a newsletter about European current affairs. Join 3,000+ followers — politicians, artists, and journalists — from the USA, Canada, Great Britain, and the EU.

The daily news cycle covers the most sensational exceptions, leaving you in the dark about patterns and rules. I will help you focus on the most important developments instead.

I want you to understand the underlying forces that shape the future of Europe by sharing a story every week. Since every good story has a clear theme, I’ll choose a different theme in every episode. Whether you’re living in the United States, Canada, or anywhere else, with the European, you’ll make sense of what’s happening on this side of the Atlantic.

Who are you?

I am an independent journalist from the Netherlands, and I have lived in Brussels, Amsterdam, and Paris. Previously, I have worked as a correspondent and reporter for Dutch newspapers and magazines — such as VICEde Volkskrant, and De Groene Amsterdammer. I also worked as a political advisor, and I hold an LLM in European Law, MSc in Political Science, and a BA in History. I read German, French, Spanish, Belgian, Dutch, and British newspapers, so you don’t need to.

What do you write about?

I will talk about the most important European news of the week. But I will also go beyond the headlines and look for the history and culture behind that news. I’ll always be keeping it short, so you can read it in a few minutes.

That’s me! Photo by Daniël Rommens.
