The European is a newsletter about the history and culture behind European current affairs. By subscribing, join a community of politicians, artists, and journalists from the USA, Canada, Great Britain, and the EU.

When the daily news highlights sensational exceptions, it often leaves us in the dark about broader patterns and rules. Let’s offer an alternative, in short form, by placing the news in a historical context or sharing insights from the books and essays we read.

Weekly notes can help us understand the underlying forces shaping Europe's future. The European focuses on a different theme each week.

Who are you?

I am a former journalist from the Netherlands who lived in Brussels, Amsterdam, and Paris. Previously, I worked as a correspondent and reporter for Dutch newspapers and magazines, such as VICE and de Volkskrant.

I’ve also worked as a political advisor and was a candidate for parliament in the 2023 Dutch general elections. I hold an LLM in European Law, an MSc in Political Science, and a BA in History.

What do you write about?

I typically discuss the most important European news of the week. I want to go beyond the headlines to explore the history and culture behind the news. My notes are short, so you can read them in a minute or two.
